Home Learning

At St. Gerard’s we are committed to do all that we can to ensure that your child’s learning continues at home in the event of school or bubble closure.

We have been busy planning our ‘Home Learning’ procedures so that your child will receive daily instruction and guidance from their class teacher via ‘Google Classroom’ in the event of a bubble closure or lockdown.

Also see our Remote Learning Policy on our Policies and Documents page.

Google Classroom

Google Classroom

In the event of a lockdown or bubble closure, teachers and teaching assistants will use Google Classroom to communicate with your children, set work and give feedback and support.

Every child has a username and password. They will be given this by their class teacher, but if they lose it or forget, you can request it from their dedicated class email (see below) for help.

Teachers will log on to Google Classroom at 9.00am each day to explain the daily lessons and tasks for you child. They will do this through the ‘stream’ feature in the classroom. Teachers will then set tasks or give links to tasks, in the ‘classwork’ section.

You should check Google Classroom daily to see the new learning that has been set for your child. Some pieces of learning will have a deadline for submission; children should be encouraged to complete the learning by the given dates. Teachers and teaching assistants will provide feedback.

We understand that parents and carers may be concerned about the amount of screen time children are being exposed to already. Your child may also be sharing their computer or tablet with other family members. Classwork can be completed on paper and then a photo of the learning can be submitted on Google Classroom or sent by email to the dedicated class email.

School Subscriptions

We also subscribe to a lot of online learning resources, and your child will have a log in and will know how to use the sites below already. If your child has forgotten their login details, please send an email to the dedicated class email (see below).

Online Classrooms

Oak National Academy

The Oak National Academy has been developed by teachers, supported by the DfE, to provide home learning lessons and resources for a range of subjects. Choose your year group, then the date, and you will find three daily video lessons and supporting activities for the children:

BBC Bitesize Daily Lessons

From 20 April, BBC Bitesize have launched a Daily Lessons site for home learning in Maths and English, as well as regular lessons in Science, History, Geography and more. These lessons have been created by teachers and other educational experts and feature a mix of videos, animations, practice activities, quizzes and games:

Letters and Sounds

Join in daily Letters and Sounds Phonics lessons on YouTube throughout the Autumn Term. Designed and delivered by experts, the lessons use the Letters and Sounds programme which is the exact programme we use at St Gerard’s:

Class Emails

The class emails will only be in use during a lockdown or bubble closure. If your child is 'home learning' because of a closure, these email accounts will be checked between 9.00am and 4.00pm. They will be specifically for home learning questions or to submit photos of work.
