Year 1

Welcome from Year 1.

Welcome to Year 1 where you will meet our teacher Mrs Nolan and our Teaching Assistant Mrs Sprigg.

During transition time, we work in small groups with our teachers to allow us to make the transition from Reception to Year 1. Some of us will be working independently and some of us will be working in groups with an adult.

Every morning we will do Handwriting and Guided Reading. During our transition time, we will have a morning of English, Mathematics or Religious Education. We will regularly attend Mass at Church with children from other year groups.

In the afternoons, we will learn all about the world around us, through history, Geography, Art, Design Technology, Citizenship, Computing, Music and P.E. Learning about our Catholic faith is a big part of everything we do.

After our transition phase, we will follow a full timetable, learning English and Mathematics every morning as a whole class.

In Year 1, we choose a new book every Monday or Tuesday to share as a family at home; we also have books that we try to read on our own or to an adult. On a Friday we take home spelling to learn and our homework, this has to returned completed on a Wednesday. Spelling tests will usually be on a Friday. Practising our reading and spelling everyday helps us in all areas of our work.

To help with our learning experiences we have a chance to go on trips in the local area and further afield. We are looking forward to a trip to Hatton Country world and a trip to the Think Tank in Birmingham. We also go on a walk around Castle Vale to familiarise ourselves with the local area.

Many interesting things happen in Year 1:

  • Singing with a specialist-singing teacher.
  • Inspire workshops, where we work with our parents.
  • Zoo lab – a visit from interesting animals.
  • Celebrating World-Faith week – looking at other faiths in our community.
  • PE kits should be named and in school every day.
  • Vocations week.
  • 'All That I Am' week.
